News
Target Grant
Target recently awarded a $2,000 grant to the California Family Counseling Center (CalFam) for the Men’s Group for Ending Domestic Violence.  This is a wonderful reflection on the excellent community service CalFam provides to the Valley Community.

A Fine Arts Exhibit of Artists with Developmental Disabilities
November 2 -- February 19
Phillips Campus 5445 Balboa Blvd. Encino
The Art Therapy Program at Phillips is collaborating with the Art Center – San Pedro Exceptional Children’s Foundation to present “A Fine Arts Exhibit of Artists with Developmental Disabilities.” Surprising and touching, many pieces are still for sale and are on display in the 2nd floor hallway gallery near the Clinical Psychology Program Offices. For more information, contact Noah Hass-Cohen.

Catch Them Being Good
Jody Kussin, Ph.D. recently sat down to discuss her seminal parenting work, Catch Them Being Good.  We asked her how she came to write this informative book:

“When I started my post doc many years ago, I already had an interest in the area of parenting.  I went to work at a child community mental health center where they offered parenting classes, but for some reason, had high attrition rates.  They couldn’t keep the parents attending the parenting classes.

"It turned out that the parents by and large felt two things about the classes. The first thing was that they felt negatively judged, and the second thing was that they felt helpless and hopeless. The interns, on the other hand, felt like the parents were ‘bad parents’ and they too, therefore, felt helpless.

"I realized that what was missing was that there was no focus on the relationship – neither the relationship between the parent and the child, nor the relationship between the mental health professional and the parent. In reviewing the available parenting programs, it seemed they all began by assuming a connection/attachment between parents and children, rather than by beginning with assistant parents to establish or re-establish that relationship.

"I decided to create a program that invited and supported and encouraged parents to develop a life-long relationship with their children.”

Finding Common Ground Among Programs: A Panel Discussion
On December 2 the Alumni Association presented "Finding Common Ground" an exploration of how MFTs, Psychologists, and Organizational Consultants have intersecting and complimentary areas of study and practice. Led by Alumni Board President Kirby Tepper, a panel of students and alumni explored the ways that Phillips alumni from different disciplines can work together and rely on each other for referrals.

Student Scholarships

Recent cutbacks in federal financial aid programs have endangered Phillips student scholarship funding. When you receive the Winter scholarship mailing, please consider making a gift to help defray expenses for current students as they work toward their personal and professional goals. For more information, see the scholarship pages, or call Cynthia Carr, Director of Advancement at 818.654.1732.

Communications Bureau
The Alumni Association has teamed up with Phillips and CalFam to establish the Communications Bureau as a resource for alums, students and the community. Alums and students from any Phillips program can apply to present talks and workshops to nonprofits, organizations, businesses and schools on psychoeducational and organizational topics such as Leadership in Nonprofits, School Violence, Organizational Efficiency, Domestic Violence, etc.  If you are interested in becoming a speaker with the Communications Bureau, please complete the Temporary Speakers Form and return it to Francine Roberts or fax it to 818.654.1772.

MFT Students and Required Therapeutic Hours
Providing MFT students with therapy on a sliding scale is a great way to give back to Phillips students and to the mental health profession. The MA in Psychology program requires students to experience their own personal therapy prior to graduation. Please email Lisa Wolfe, MFT Clinical Training Coordinator to be added to the Psychotherapist Directory.
